Bentley Warren with his trademark red bandana driving Howard Purdy's "little deuce". He won in this car in 1969, (not to mention the other 5!)., oswb0001.jpg, Volume1.
Joe Hlywka from Toronto in the Dick Lawless chevy. The grey in back is from where they had to put a big tank in for the Oswego Classic., oswb0002.jpg, Volume1.
Sonny McHenry in the "Lone Merc" at the 1968 Oswego classic., oswb0003.jpg, Volume1.
Eldon Schrader from Sturgis, Michigan in the yellow Ernie and Bob June #59. This car was also driven by Neil Tooley, Jack Thomas, and, after Eldon, Jimmy Winks., oswb0004.jpg, Volume1.
The biggest challenge to Nolan Swift in the late 60's, Jim Shampine in his hot 8-ball. When his "wedge" car didn't work out, he went back to this car. Jim won a lot of features in this car, but notice how it is setup, with the motor in the center and the driver offset to the left. Jim's next car reversed this, with the motor offset to the left and the driver down the center line, and he won the 1970 Oswego Classic. Nowadays, of course, everybody has their motor radically offset to the left., oswb0005.jpg, Volume1.
Jim Howard in his Dodge powered rear engine super. With it's independent rear suspension, this was one of the first good rear-engined cars. It never did real well in the classic, however., oswb0006.jpg, Volume1.
Norm Mackereth's #40. He bought this car from Gordy Dukes who won the classic in 1965 in it. Norm later sold it to Jim Gray of Oswego, who lived right by the track. The beautiful number 98 roadster is Walt Riley from Hamilton, Ontario. This is the same car driven by Andy Brown in the 1971 classic., oswb0007.jpg, Volume1.
I'm pretty sure this is Johnny Logan from Charlotte, MI in this white, upright #21. Notice the huge tank added on., oswb0008.jpg, Volume1.
A view of the pits for the Oswego Classic. What year...I don't know, maybe '69 or '70., oswb0009.jpg, Volume1.
Ollie Silva of Haverhill, Mass. Ollie raced a lot up and down the east coast, but always stopped in for the Oswego Classic., oswb0010.jpg, Volume1.
  , oswb0011.jpg, Volume1.
Fred Graves from Central Square, NY. This car had a sprinter style rear, but he squared it off to get the big tank in for the Oswego Classic. This must be '68, because in '69 had had a red #37., oswb0012.jpg, Volume1.
Baldy Baker in the yellow #24 (usually #22). Sam Sessions I think in the white Sammy's Garage #21 with the big tank cut into the back., oswb0013.jpg, Volume1.
Start of a heat at the '68 Oswego Classic weekend, I think., oswb0014.jpg, Volume1.
Start of a heat at the '68 Oswego Classic weekend, I think., oswb0015.jpg, Volume1.
Fred Graves from Central Square, NY in the Bill Marsh #37. I'm pretty sure that this is not a picture of Jim Shampine - it's Kempton Dates from Red Creek, New York and his first no.28 super, which he patterned after Jimmy's highly successful 8-Ball (shown in oswb0005.jpg in volume 1). Kemp used the same "engine on the centerline, driver offset to the left" design. Although this car never worked as well as Jimmy's, Kemp figured out how to build a super and was a master for many years at the big "O." If memory serves me correctly, this is also the car that Kemp launched over the wall in the second turn and through the billboard! The car was immediately christened the "Red Creek Rocket!", oswb0016.jpg, Volume2.
Thought this was Ray Wright or Merle Huyser in this beautiful roadster, but it's actually Todd Gibson. The car belong to Bob Dorsey out Marion Ohio. It was a Kuzma car. Todd drove for Dorsey off and on between 65&67. I believe that picture is in 67 Classic., oswb0017.jpg, Volume2.
Line up to register for the (I think) '68 Oswego Classic. The Bhenke Trucking little red #60 on the trailer in the forefront was driven by Jack Lindhout., oswb0018.jpg, Volume2.
John Spencer from Toronto, Ontario. John also ran a beautiful red #7 rear-engined car., oswb0019.jpg, Volume2.
"Animal" Andy Brown from Hamilton, Ontario in his blue #00 roadster. In the off season, Andy played goalie for Detroit (one of the last goalies to not wear a mask)., oswb0020.jpg, Volume2.
This might be a 1970 shot of Jim Winks from Syracuse, NY. Could be a 1969 shot of Bruno Marcheson. Can you believe all that gas in a tank right behind the driver's head? That's not a fuel cell, it's a tank!, oswb0021.jpg, Volume2.
Here's John Spencer from Toronto in his beautiful red #7 rear-engined super. It was the first good-looking one, if you ask me. Quite the racer, John had long sideburns at one point, and long hair and bushy mustache at another. Being 9 in 1968 (the 60's), I thought John was pretty hip of course., oswb0022.jpg, Volume2.
  , oswb0023.jpg, Volume2.
That's Jack Conley from Brighton Michigan (Jack's Speed Shop) in his classic white #27 "Unfurnished Apartment". The car was a mess, but Jack's motors were something else! He was an engine builder by trade. I'm pretty sure that's Mark Letcher in the yellow #15, he later drove a white #29., oswb0024.jpg, Volume2.
Nick Rowe from Portland, Michigan in the TrierWeiler Machine Shop car. Nick's white and blue #12 with the cigar smoking Woody Woodpecker on the side was a regular both at Berlin Speedway and at Oswego. Seems like wherever we went, we'd see Nick; Berlin, Sandusky, Eldora, Oswego., oswb0025.jpg, Volume2.
A nice picture of Bentley Warren in Howard Purdy's "little deuce". What a hot little car. The driver probably helped too!, oswb0026.jpg, Volume2.
That's gotta be Fred Graves in the #92, altered to hold a big tank. 1968. The yellow car is #87 Bruce Craft from rochester N.Y.-this was his first time at Oswego. Seem to remember that he wrecked the car and came back with it painted orange and white, which he continued to use utill he quit racing supers., oswb0027.jpg, Volume2.
Al Wood in Paul Barnes' orange and white #39. Al finished second in the 1970 Oswego Classic. He could've used a taller cage., oswb0028.jpg, Volume2.
Drivers meeting before the (1969?) Oswego Classic. Jack Conley, Red Barnhart, Bentley Warren, Warren Coniam, Norm Mackereth.
Jim Liccardi writes in "Starting with circle closest to the stand, going L-R...Jim Cheney(sipping soda), Ronnie Wallace, don't know=(d/k), Kempton Dates(Glasses), d/k. row 2-Fred Graves(big ears),d/k, Sam Carista(wiping eyes),d/k-head is down. Row 3-Mackereth, Nick Rowe(head turned), Andy Brown, guy w/smoke-d/k, bare chested guy-d/k. Row 4-black suit-d/k,Gary Witter, Ollie Silva w/glasses,d/k, guy w/ hands on knee-d/k, Jonnie Benson Sr., Jack Conley(standing), in front of Conley is Red Barnhart, guy kneeling behind Conley d/k, guy w/ hand to brow-d/k, guy partialy hidden by Coniam is Jim Shampine, Warren Coniam, Bentley Warren w/red bandana, Ken Andrews w/arms braced backwards. The man standing in front on the right forground is Track Photographer Bill Hartwell. Tthe guy in the hat almost dead center, looking down, behind the rail, isn't that Bill McClure?", oswb0029.jpg, Volume2.
Uh-oh! Nolan Swift puts the 10-pins into the first turn wall at Oswego., oswb0030.jpg, Volume2.
Warren Coniam? in the #46 Rutledge Rocket. "Gentleman" Jack Greedy in the 01, Fred Graves out front in the brown and unpainted #92, Billy Yuma in the orange sprinter. Looks like a heat race at Oswego, 1968., oswb0031.jpg, Volume3.
Tony Lavati from North Olmstead, Ohio in the distinctive white #4., oswb0032.jpg, Volume3.
A shot of the pits before the (1969?) Oswego Classic. The Bhenke Trucking red #60, the white #2 "little deuce", Ollie Silva., oswb0033.jpg, Volume3.
Jack Lindhout usually drove this car, but my mom says that Johnny Benson drove it one year and that it kind of looks like him. I seem to remember Johnny wrecking his #21 "white tornado" and bringing this car to Oswego only to fail to qualify. Jim Liccardi writes in: "According to my records Benson only ran the Classic 3 times-66,67, 68,. this could be Bennett or Lindhout, he's a little short though for Jack, but definitely not Benson.", oswb0034.jpg, Volume3.
Nolan Swift in the 10-pins getting a push off. This car was hard to beat and he later sold it to Bryan Osgood. Nolan, of course, is one of Oswego's early superstars, moving from modified stockers to supermodifieds., oswb0035.jpg, Volume3.
Norm Mackereth from New Toronto, Ontario in his light blue #40 roadster. Mackereth never owned these Hagen-Howard cars. Norm Hagen and Lyle Howard did in fact buy Todd's car, but not from him. Todd originally sold it to a fellow by the name of Jim Quinn, but the car was too much for him to handle and they jumped at the chance to buy it. Once they got it home to Fulton they immediately started to build an exact copy of it. Norm had the luxury of have 2 cars at his disposal until they went the team route and put various drivers in it. This particular car is the copy., oswb0036.jpg, Volume3.
Gordon Dukes from Findlay, Ohio refused to paint his new super until he won a race in it. Here he is looking it over after piling it into the first turn wall at Oswego. This crash wrecked a suspension part and he missed the 1969 Oswego Classic. The car that Dukes was running here at this time was actually a 4-wheel drive car, not many people knew it though. what happened in this accident was the drive to the front end broke and locked up on him so he could no longer steer the car. , oswb0037.jpg, Volume3.
Gordon Dukes from Findlay, Ohio refused to paint his new super until he won a race in it. Unfortunately, he piled it into the first turn wall and missed the 1969 Oswego Classic., oswb0038.jpg, Volume3.
John Casey from Buffalo, NY in the beautiful maroon #88 roadster., oswb0039.jpg, Volume3.
Canadian "gentleman" Jack Greedy in his white #01., oswb0040.jpg, Volume3.
A shaky picture of Jim Shampine in his "wedge". The car never ran as good as he thought it would, so he later switched back to his old "8-ball". He wound up redoing this car - it came back with a straight snub-nose and without the radiators. Jimmy built this car for the 69 season. He dialed it in during the season while he still ran his old car (that he first ran in 63and re-built for the 66 season) and won only one feature for 69. Seems like Art Bennet or Johnny Logan in the #14., oswb0041.jpg, Volume3.
Mark Letcher from Kirkville, NY in the distinctive white #29., oswb0042.jpg, Volume3.
Either Jack Lindhout or Johnny Benson in the red Bhenke Trucking #60 racing Red Barnhart in the blue and white #66. Notice the huge fuel tank Red put on his car for this 1969 classic after running out of fuel while leading the 1968 classic., oswb0043.jpg, Volume3.
"Animal" Andy Brown from Hamilton, Ontario in his gold and purple #00 roadster. In the off season, Andy played goalie for Detroit (one of the last goalies to not wear a mask). This year, Andy was had a driving cast on his broken right forearm., oswb0044.jpg, Volume3.
A shaky picture of Jim Shampine in his green 8-ball. The blue #9 (91) roadster is Steve Lenhert from North Olmstead, Ohio.
Denny Hudock writes in " This car was discovered to be the Eddie Sachs Dean Van Lines Indy Roadster, and was restored to it's orginal glory and is now in New England.", oswb0045.jpg, Volume3.
Shaky picture of four cars coming out of the pits at Oswego. The front two are L-R Eldon Schrader, and Ed Vanderlaan, The car on the right rear is the Benke Trucking 60 of... I think... it was Art Bennett driving it that day., oswb0046.jpg, Volume4.
Joe Hlywka from Toronto in the beautiful red #9 Steve Gioia roadster. Baldy Baker from Strousburg, Ohio in his yellow upright #22., oswb0047.jpg, Volume4.
Bob Stelter from Syracuse, NY in the red #4 upright., oswb0048.jpg, Volume4.
Going around the first turn at Oswego Speedway (1969?). From the lead car in order are Billy Yuma, Jack Conley, Harold Brown, I think Freddie Grave's 92, Ollie Silva outside of him, Warren Coniam 46, Jack Houseworth 18, Eldon Schrader 20, and Don MacLaren in the Bowley Flyin 5., oswb0049.jpg, Volume4.
Racing down the front stretch at Oswego Speedway (1969?). The lead car is John Logan, the Bob & Ernie June 59 car with Jack Thomas, and the 00 of Andy Brown, looks like Johnny Benson in the #21 behind Andy., oswb0050.jpg, Volume4.

A view of the pits at the 1969 Oswego Classic., oswb0055.jpg, Volume4.
Jack Conley from Brighton, MI an engine builder by trade, built this unpainted #26. Jack's motors were awesome, even if his cars looked unkempt., oswb0057.jpg, Volume4.
Looks like a car driven by Dick Bandy from South Bend, Indiana. This is the #27 driven by Jack Thomas in the 1968 Classic., oswb0058.jpg, Volume4.
Howie Scannell from Milton, Ontario. This car is an ex-Hylwka/Duncan car and I believe the owner was Norm Morton, father of current ISMA driver Gary Morton., oswb0059.jpg, Volume4.
A view of the pits at the 1969 Oswego Classic. In the foreground is Nolan Johncock in the Persh Pollock #50. In the back from L-R are 45 Howie Scannell, 46 Warren Coniam, the black #51 of Canadian Mike Stone, and the white car is the tailend of #1 Gordon Dukes., oswb0060.jpg, Volume4.

1971 (could be '68) shot of Wayne Landon from Hastings, Michigan in the Gioia-Landon red #9 roadster., oswb0067.jpg, Volume5.
Ed VanderLaan from Grand Rapids, Michigan in the famous yellow #17 upright super. I saw this car go upside down over the third turn fence at Berlin Speedway and leave it's wing in the chain link fence (Ed was ok). Ed always gave Johnny Benson a run for his money. That's is Art Bennet from Battle Creek, MI in the white #14 upright super. Art won the 1961 classic., oswb0068.jpg, Volume5.
Bruno Marcheson from Hamilton Ontario in the Howard's Sunoco #43 upright super., oswb0069.jpg, Volume5.
Warren Coniam from King City, Ontario in the blue and white #46 Rutledge Rocket., oswb0070.jpg, Volume5.
I believe this is Nolan Johncock (my mom's favorite driver) in the Persh Pollock's yellow #50 pushing off for time trials, oswb0071.jpg, Volume5.

Bob Crowley raced Supers in the 60's in the Michigan area, at such tracks as Berlin, Grand Rapids Speedrome, Dixie, Mount Clemons and Capital City. This is his blue #55 - must be at the Speedrome. Don Crowley, (Bob's son) "did watch him race,I was a teenager (14) in 1965. He started racing in 1957 at Mt. Clemmons Speedway with a car he also built #75, and later in the early 60's he raced another car he built #76 at Capital City Speed way in Lansing and Dixie Speedway.", BobCrowley.jpg, Volume6.
Dick Carter raced at Berlin in Marne, MI. I believe he raced on the dirt and then on asphalt once they paved it. Dick was awesome at that track and ruled on many a Saturday night. I think he got killed there, but I don't remember the specifics of the accident., DickCarter.jpg, Volume6.
  Harry Jones., HarryJones_2.jpg, Volume6.
Jimmy Nelson's #8 that he drove at every track in Michigan, this car was later driven by Bob Carnes after Nelson's death. I remember Jimmy "just standing on it" at the Speedrome in Comstock Park (before they put US131 through the middle of the track). What a show he would put on! Jimmy was killed there drving Norm Rust's "Flyin' 9" in an accident involving Randy Sweet. I was a little kid then, but I'll never forget him., JimNelson2.jpg, Volume6.
Nolan Johncock. I think this is one of the Max Dowker cars. That's "Noley" to the left there in the driving suit., NOLAN_2.jpg, Volume7.

Jack Greedy and Bentley Warren wrecking very hard inbetween 3-4 at Oswego. It happened on the last race in Oct. 69, Bentley hit so hard that while he was at the hospital he kept saying that he had to get back to the track so he could win the Classic, Now mind you, he had already won the Classic a month earlier on Labor Day Weekend Sept. 69, but the doctors and nurses could not convince him of that fact. This accident I think pretty much ended Jack's racing., 2and01.jpg, Volume8.

"I guess I liked the gorilla", says Tom. This is Buster Taylor's 91 car. Doug Henderson drove this car to some success, also the 197. Doug is his first name, not Don. Doug is still involved in racing today (1999). He owns a 350 super, #91, and drove up until last year. Now his son, 17 yr. old Curtis drives it.
From Dave Thomas Jr.: "The picture (3rd row down in the center-the one with the gorilla on the back) is indeed my father. This is a car that was formally owned by Buster Taylor of Dunstable, Mass. It was nicknamed the "Texas Yankee" because my father and his family was originally from Texas, but later moved to New Hampshire. Along with my father in this picture is his father Phil Thomas. This car is currently #61jr. (for its other former driver Eddie West) and owned by Stu Lord. I have seen the car occasionally at Lee Speedway doing a few "hot laps" now and then!"

The Snapp Special car. I believe the driver here is Jim Martel, although several guys drove this car including Buzz Gregory. I believe the car is an Edmunds super which was an unusual sight around here. Note that the photos show that the car appears to have been lengthened. Also note the five-gallon "Jerry Can" fuel cell. Scary! , star022.jpg, Volume9.
The Snapp Special car. Possibly Howard Brown in the car? Dick Mills was the first to drive this car. Dave Thomas drove it one time at Thompson. It WAS a small car, but had a large and powerful 400ci. motor, the car WAS lengthened., star023.jpg, Volume9.

David Thomas writes in: "Dad thinks Babe Branscombe may be in the car in this picture? The car is a VERY early Edmonds sprinter. (Dad thinks) Jimmy sold this car for $10,000 and wished he didn't. Note: Big blocks were starting to come into the field of Supers. This car used to be a small block. This car had a Model A -Type front spring (it ran from side to side with jacking bolts). Jimmy was very dominant in this car!!", star033.jpg, Volume10.

That car if I remember that year was driven by Tampa Florida's Bill Roynon and the # 43 in the background was driven by Page Reynolds out of Texas.    Dick Batchelder, 1973 at the Star. Dick always had a finelooking car and did very well wherever he raced. These were, of course, the glory days for the old NESMRA (New England Super Modified Racing Association) club. By this time the NESMRA guys were traveling to Oswego and vice versa. Sure made for some good racing., star035.jpg, Volume11.

Dave Thomas writes in: "Pontiac power was very unusual at this time. The original owner was Danny (?). The car was newin 1966 at Trenton, NJ and Mario Andretti (then 16 years old) "begged" to drive the car, and Danny told him to come back when he had a little more experience! (Ha Ha!) Also... This is the car that Bentley Warren got in trouble with U.S.A.C. with when he drove under a different name. The throttle stuck in the car. It was an truly awful accident where Bentley ended up breaking both his legs, Amos Bird was seriously injured, and police officer Dick Preston lost both of his legs. Lee Booze writes in "I believe the #7 is the Dowker Roadster with Johnny Logan at the wheel. 1973 would have been after Nolan Johncock was killed at Sandusky in the Dowker car.   Billy Murphy the "Flying Irishman" bought this car from Bob Hamke, who built it. By the time these pictures were taken in '72, this car's technology was well out of date, but no one told Bill and he continued to race and win.
Dave Thomas writes in: " Paul Richardson is in the yellow shirt. Bobby Allison (the former W.C. driver) won alot of races with this car in Florida. My father would love to find and restore this car and notes that this car by no means would be considered out of date at this time, he says it was still an extremely fast car."
Brad Sargent writes in: "This is the pic of Billy Murphy's car but before he bought it it was also driven by Bobby Allison Donnie Allison and Red Farmer. But back then it was the #119 and had 101 feature wins when Bill purchased it from Bob Hamke.   A photo of Gary Reichert's Supermodified from an old Open Wheel (Vol 1 No 2).This is not the car that they ran as a modified too, that was the old car from circa 1972. In the1974 Port City 150 of Supers & Modifieds Reichert won the Mod portion of the show and his owners, the Turner Bros., took the body off the body and he finished fourth to Shampine's win. This car was built as a supermodified in 1974 for Gary. It orginally had a supercharger on the motor when it first came. It never ran as well as the older car., ow001.jpg, Volume15.

1973, I think, at the Thompson (CT) Speedway. This is indeed Ronnie Wallace, who Swift picked to drive when he retired for the first time (or was it the second?)...Big Don McLaren drove the previous edition of the 10 pins, but as far as I know only when it was numbered Flyin' 5 after Ed Bowley bought it. The driver standing in the background, almost center, is Warren Coniam., thom007.jpg, Volume17.
Probably 1973 at the Thompson (CT) Speedway. Looks like the C-15 and Bruce Kraft drove the car at Oswego in '72 or '73., thom008.jpg, Volume17.
1973, I think, at the Thompson (CT) Speedway. The guy in the dark jacket, I think is Howard Purdy, and the guy in the white is Ray Moonan. The car is numbered 2, but I have no idea who is driving. It could be Bentley Warren, he used to wear goggles and a white open face helmet in '67, and was wearing the same when he won the Classic in '69. , thom009.jpg, Volume17.

April, 1972 at the Thompson (CT) Speedway. Waiting for the start. Paul Richardson (#52), Eddie West (#61 jr), Bob Millett (#3), Dave Thomas (#1). Thomas was badly hurt in a nasty flip in this race.
From Dave Thomas Jr.: "That was my dad's very FIRST supermodified race. It is the car that he owned along with local Supermodified owner Tim Trefethen. Unfortunately he ended up "barrel rolling" the car over 20 times in this race! It was probably one of (if not the...) worst crashes of his career. The car is currently in Epping, NH and is being restored by a member of the Trefethen family.", thom018.jpg, Volume17.

1967 at the Star. Jerry Dolliver (sp?). As I remember, Jerry came back to the supers after having open heart surgery. This car was owned by "Junior" Prescott. Junior is carrying the air tank.   Oswego. Another Shampine car, but I'm not so sure that he's the driver.Possibly, this is Ron Gamble., os018.jpg, Volume19.
Oswego. John Clapham in the Rutledge Rocket. Clapham came up to Star and won the NH Classic. I think it was with this car., os019.jpg, Volume19.
Oswego. Nolan Swift in the 10 Pins. This has to be one of the top five best looking supers ever!, os020.jpg, Volume19.
Ollie Silva from Haverhill, MA. In his day, Ollie was Mr. Supermodified in New England. I remember this car painted black with the same tilted "0". It doesn't look fast, but the guy sure could drive it., os021.jpg, Volume19.
No idea who this is. Possibly Andy Brown in his gold and purple roadster., os022.jpg, Volume19.
Jim Gray from Oswego (originally from Toronto) running at Oswego in an ex-Norm Mackereth, ex-Gordon Dukes car., os023.jpg, Volume19.
"Snortin" John Norton from London, Ontario. The car is the "Currie Brothers Steel Erection Special". It normally ran as number 18, but ran as number 81 when it qualified 26th for the 1970 classic., os024.jpg, Volume19.
Maybe the first ex-indy roadster to run at Oswego, I think Billy Vess drove it in 61-62. It was an ex Tony Bettenhausen car and Joe Orso drove the same car owned by Andy Susco in 69-70. This must be a picture of Susco owned, Orso driven car. It was gold and blue-real clean but not real fast, but they tried real hard. #96 was Joe's number at Brewerton for years-he passed away last year (1998)., os025.jpg, Volume19.
No idea who this is., os026.jpg, Volume19.
Mark Letcher in the Dick Ranier number 29., os027.jpg, Volume19.

  , os029.jpg, Volume19.
This must be John Burkholder from Toronto, Ontario in a car he bought from Bill Corbin., os030.jpg, Volume19.
Coming off the 4th turn at Oswego, it looks like John Burkholder from Toronto, Ontario leading. I don't know who the middle car is. The third car is a car that, in 1972, was owned by the Austin brothers from Syracuse, NY and driven by Ray Sand from 71 to 74 as number 71. But I think this is a 1970 picture, and I don't know who drove it or owned it, or what number it was then., os031.jpg, Volume19.
Oswego. This car #60 is Corky Stockham, before he began publishing the National Parts Peddler. , os032.jpg, Volume20.
Bryan Osgood in the #09 at Oswego. Nolan Swift built and raced this car (it is an ex-"10 pins" car)., os033.jpg, Volume20.
This pic is Mike Rizzo from 1974. Although it doesn't look like it, this car used to be the colt 45 that Red Barnhardt drove in the 60s. Mike ended up driving this car at Weedsport and Rolling Wheels with the URC sprinters in 1975., riz74.jpg, Volume20.

Bentley Warren drove this "Flyin 5" at the 1965 Sandusky Classic., BentleyWarren.jpg, Volume20.
"The Inimitable 151". This Bingo 151 car was driven at the 1967 Sandusky Classic by Johnny Logan. I think Max Dowker built this car and it was also driven by Sam Sessions, Art Bennett, Mort Andresen, and Ken Crampton. In it's early years, the car was owned by Pete Webster, and originally driven by Nelson Ward. At that time the car was Bingo 5. John Gradentski of Vermontville built the engine. The number was changed to Bingo 151 when Sam Sessions took over the car after Nelson Ward was killed at Owsego.
After talking with John McRae momentarily in the pits after the '99 classic, I went back in the archives and found the official entry list for the 1966 classic that indeed has John McRae driving it that year., Bingo151.jpg, Volume20.
Dick De Bolt arriving at the 1965 Sandusky Classic with his #25 roadster., DickDeBolt.jpg, Volume20.
I just had to post pictures of a couple stockers. Some Grand Rapids racing fans may remember the Speedrome before it was plowed under to make room for US131. Well, I remember very well the many nights that Dick Dunshee and Bobby Senneker mixed it up. I was a Dunshee fan - I guess I liked the looks of Dicks car. I used to tell everybody that 66 was my favorite number. And the couple of times I got to go in the pits and look inside of Dicks car were magic., Dunshee1.jpg, Volume20.
I just had to post pictures of a couple stockers. Some Grand Rapids racing fans may remember the Speedrome before it was plowed under to make room for US131. Well, I remember very well the many nights that Dick Dunshee and Bobby Senneker mixed it up. I was a Dunshee fan, but Bobby Senneker was phenomenal and went on to legendary status in the ASA series, of course., Senneker1.jpg, Volume20.
Tom York was driving this Bob Dorsey owned, ex-Todd Gibson car at the 1965 Sandusky Classic. This blue and white upright super had a Buick power plant., Gibson-York.jpg, Volume20.
Gordon Dukes in his "road runner" car at the 1965 Sandusky Classic. This car had a 326.8 cubic inch Pontiac., GordonDukes.jpg, Volume20.

Joe Hylwka at the 1965 Sandusky Classic. This car was #23. Is that a strap holding the gas tank on?, Hylwka.jpg, Volume20.
What a picture! Jack Conley rolling up to check in to the 1965 Sandusky Classic. Unpainted car, spare tire in the cockpit. He raced as #26 even though it looks like the car is numbered 11. Jack's cars didn't look like much, but Jack was an engine builder from Brighton, MI, and boy could his cars go!, JackConley.jpg, Volume20.
Jack Nichols with his red #41 super, 1967., JackNichols.jpg, Volume20.
We met Jim Balder at races around Grand Rapids. He always wanted to race, so he bought this super. Jim and my dad, Ron Nielsen, worked on this car in our garage in Rockford, Michigan. The first thing they did was change it over to "USAC", that is, fine threads, grade A, aircraft quality bolts, etc. Jim always had to have the car looking good, and I think you'll agree that it is a nice looking car. Jim named his car "The Odyssey" and my brother Dave once stood up and played "The Theme to 2001 Space Odyssey" on his trumpet when Jim came out to qualify at the Berlin Speedway in Marne, MI.
Jim had a Dodge Challenger as his personal car and it was in the back seat of that Challenger that I first experienced rapid acceleration!
This is an Edmunds car that Duane Spangler (Bryan, Ohio) got as a kit out of California. Duane sold the car to Jim in November of '72 after Jim and Johnny Logan flew down to Ohio to look at it. (Johnny was a pilot and decided to land next to the runway in Ohio - sometimes clear land beside an existing strip gives a softer landing - Well they hit a concealed drainage ditch, busted the tail gear and flattened a tire and ended up in a bean field after a the plane took a sharp left).
This Ray Rodgers picture was taken at Jim's second race ever...Berlin, 1973. Jim later renamed the car "Spirit of 76" and raced the car until August 29, 1976 when he flipped it at Kalamazoo after getting in the oil put down by Ron Kholer's blown engine. Jim later sold the car to John Witter from Indiana who turned it into a sprinter. Then Jim Murphy had it...Right now, Garry King has the car and is restoring it., JimBalder.jpg, Volume21.
Jim Gresley drove this #98 upright super at the 1965 Sandusky Classic. Jim was from the Battle Creek, Michigan area. This car was owned by Jack Conely and driven by Gresley to a second place finish in the '65 Classic., JimGresley.jpg, Volume21.
Jim McCune in his #1 at the 1965 Sandusky Classic., JimMcCune.jpg, Volume21.
Jimmy Nelson from Grand Rapids, Michigan. I remember watching Jimmy in this car at the Speedrome in G.R. Man alive, the guy would absolutely stand on it! Wheel to wheel, neck and neck, sometimes two abreast all the way around the track. Jimmy was killed at the Speedrome, but the legend lives on. See the story about Dick and Jimmy Nelson in the reminiscing section of Issue 1 for more., JimmyNelson.jpg, Volume21.
Jim Shampine's Ford powered 8 ball on the trailer at the 1965 Sandusky Classic., JimShampine.jpg, Volume21.
Joe Martincic at the 1965 Sandusky Classic. His #707 red, white, and black super had a 327 Corvette engine., JoeMartincic.jpg, Volume21.
  Johnny Benson's white #21 "White Tornado" on the trailer. 1966 or 67., JohnnyBenson3.jpg, Volume21.
Karl Busson brought this 327 Chevy powered, white #95 sprinter to the 1965 Sandusky Classic., KarlBusson.jpg, Volume21.
Dean Mast's red and white 327 Chevy sprinter at Sandusky in 1965. These guys had two sprinters they would haul around on the one trailer. Nice looking set up. Behind Dean's car is the number 62 of Baldy Baker. It was a white and light blue roadster with a 427 fuel injected Ford., Mast-Baker.jpg, Volume21.
A 1965 "Ray's Racing Pictures" shot of Nolan Johncock at the Speedrome in Grand Rapids. Noley (cousin to Gordon Johncock) was my moms favorite driver back then - in fact, one year for Mother's Day she got a Nolan Johncock picture button from us kids., NolanJohncock65.jpg, Volume21.
A 1967 shot of Nolan Johncock's "Strip Teaser". To say this super was "audacious" would be an understatement. Fluorescent pink and white striped, this car was a site to behold. I believe Nolan was signed with USAC at the time and so he couldn't race under his own name, so he showed up and raced under the name of "Joe Chance"., NolanJohncock67.jpg, Volume21.
Norm Smith brought this #92 rear engined super to the 1965 Sandusky Classic. I also see Ed Vanderlaan's yellow #17 in the background., NormSmith.jpg, Volume21.
Oscar Faye in his sprinter. We also have Oscar's autograph., OscarFaye.jpg, Volume21.
Rich Senneker drove this super in 1967. Rich was killed in a supermodified accident, but I'm not sure where, when, or if it was in this car., RichSenneker.jpg, Volume21.
Ron Lux brought Howard Purdy's white #2 "Little Duece" to the 1965 Sandusky Classic., RonLux.jpg, Volume21.
Ron Neal had this "sidecar" at the 1965 Sandusky Classic. Inside was a 327 Corvette engine. On the left side sat the driver!? Of course, unless your driver weighed 600 lbs, you would want your motor offset to the left, not your driver. In the background is the #44 Buick of Buddy Miller., RonNeal.jpg, Volume22.
Oh man! Todd Gibson! This is a 1965 shot of his car (327 Chevy). His car was the "Flintstone Flyer", but we all called him "Hot Toddie". Todd was big at Sandusky, Ohio and did well at the Oswego Classic for many years. His son, Gene Lee Gibson is, of course, quite the racer as well. Must be a genetic component in there somewhere. At the 1965 Sandusky Classic, Todd won the Fast Car Dash and the Feature in this car., ToddGibson.jpg, Volume22.

George Fosco with his "Perma Glas-Mesh Special" at the 1965 Sandusky Classic., GeorgeFosco.jpg, Volume22.
Here's a pic of Wayne McGuire at Oswego in either 65 or 66 I believe. One of our local [West Virginia] favorites, Wayne used to come up there and run the "Classic" in the early 1960's. Wayne iss still (September '99) living in eastern Kentucky and, as far as I know, is in pretty good health except that his eyesight is poor. Wayne always had one leg shorter than the other (he wore a builtup shoe and was actually crippled). Well, he had to have knee surgery a few years ago (us old people have to have that done sometimes) and it left him with legs the same length thus curing his problem., Wm9.jpg, Volume22.

When my family came out from eating dinner they were working on the car in the parking lot, so we went over to talk to the men and when they were ready to go up to the track they let my cousin's and myself ride up on the trailer and sit in the car going up to the track. the car was a bright, almost a flouresent pink with black numbers and trim.", dw23.jpg, Volume22.

1967, Mobile, Alabama. The #71 of Donnie Hamilton from Santa Anna, California. I was told that this car was at one time driven by Billy Vukovich Jr. This one burned to the ground after a low speed rear-ender on the main straight in the 300. To say the least, the track was not prepared for a major alcohol fire.
Jim Thurman writes in :"His name is Don Hamilton and he raced out of El Cajon, California, not Santa Ana. The car is one of the famous Peat Brothers "T". This car, with Don Edmunds and then Bob Hogle at the wheel, dominated the San Diego Racing Association Modified Sportsman (their name for caged Sprints/Supers) in 1966 and 1967. Billy Vukovich Jr. did in fact drive the car, at Cajon, I was there that night! (he threw a heck of a tantrum after a heat race incident, standing in the cockpit and pounding his fists on the top of the car as the cars lined up to exit the track)
I had heard the car burned to the ground at an open race in Mobile, Alabama, but hadn't seen a picture. What a great shot it is to see this car on what sadly proved to be it's last day. I had read the Peat Brothers also ran (or were planning on running) a few other events in the South on this trip, one being Pensacola, Florida. Don Hamilton went on to win the 1973 CRA Sprint Car championship.
The SDRA didn't allow wings, so the Peat Bros. T ran without one at Cajon. The brothers built two more cars, one of which was raced in Northern California and Washington for years and the other which reportedly met it's demise on an Iowa dirt track."

Jim writes in: " I recently came across kind of sad find. The first attachment is a picture of Wayne Landon in a car that he bought from Ken Bartholomew in 1969. It was purple #44. Well Wayne drove it for quite a few years and was helped by a local speed shop owner, Billy Law, when visiting Oswego. Well at the end of July of 1977, Wayne and Billy decided that they would build a new car for the '77 Classic. They had less that 1 month to accomplish this feat. In the process they stripped this car of it's usableparts and the frame was discarded and set to one side on the land that Law has the Speed Shop on. I had heard about it, and one day was able to see it from the road. It was early spring and the grass and weeds had not had a chance to grow yet so the frame was quite visible. I always looked for it each time I passed by through the years, always wanting to stop and take a look at it, but could never get close enough with the weeds and grass growing around, and through it. About a month ago I was passing by and found the weeds to be cut down and the frame pulled out as if to be moved or somebody could see it, so I went right home and came back with my camera and took some pictures. It is truly sad to look at this frame today, and know it's rich history., landon_44-2.jpg, Volume43.
